He has been involved in projects related to fishery resources, water quality analysis and environmental impact assessment, and in research studies including benthic ecology, artificial reef systems, marine pollution and coastal conservation. He has published 200 papers in book chapters, conference proceedings and international journals. He has also served as Chairman of the Endangered Species Advisory Committee, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, China and Vice-Chairman of the Management Committee, Mai Po Nature Reserve, World Wide Fund (Hong Kong). In recognition of his contribution to conservation and public services, Dr. Shin received the Medal of Honour from the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2015. Currently, he is Co-Chair(South East Asia) of the IUCN SSC Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group and Associate Editor of Marine Pollution Bulletin.
MISHRA K. Jayant Title: Horseshoe Crabs in the Face of Climate Change: Future Challenges and Conservation Strategies for their Sustainable Growth and Existence Abstract
Bibliography
Dr. Jayant Kumar Mishra is affiliated with Pondicherry University since the year 2006 as a Professor in the Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology located at Port Blair, Andamans, India. He is well trained in the field of Marine Science and Technology, especially in the field of Marine Biotechnology with more than 31 years of experiences at National and International Institutions of repute like National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, Nagasaki University and Shizuoka University, Japan and as Expert in the Task force with Ministry of Education and Ministry of Fisheries, Eritrea, N-E Africa. He has 75 research publications in National and International journals to his credit and six educational documentary films at International and National level with National award winning film “True Survivor, The Horseshoe crab in 2009”. He is involved with research on Indian horseshoe crabs since last 31 years and also has completed or involved in several research applied research projects in the area of Marine Biotechnology involving induced breeding of marine invertebrates, marine chemical communication, marine bioactive compounds, coastal biodiversity and biofouling studies etc. Since his inception in the Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology of Pondicherry University, he has evolved strategies for marine bio-resource management by developing new methods and technologies particularly for the conservation of endangered species. He also explored the involvement of conspecific chemical communication in between the adult and larvae in marine invertebrates and their role in larval settlement process. He has taken the lead in developing identifying novel bio-molecules with potential therapeutic value from the marine natural resources particularly secondary metabolites from marine sponges, seaweeds and mangrove endophytes etc.
MATTEI Jennifer Title: The Power of Citizen Science: Twenty Years of Horseshoe Crab Community Research Merging Conservation with Education Abstract
Bibliography
Dr. Jennifer H. Mattei has a wide range of interests in population ecology, restoration, and conservation, with over 25 years of experience working in coastal ecosystems. After completing her Master’s of Forest Science at Yale, a Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolution at Stony Brook, Mattei was a post-doc at Rutgers University where she was part of a team of scientists to be the first to successfully restore coastal woody shrub habitats on top of closed sections of the largest landfill in the US. After starting her career as a professor at Sacred Heart University (SHU), she began work on the population ecology and conservation of the American Horseshoe Crab and is founder and director of Project Limulus (www.projectlimulus.org) a community based research program in Long Island Sound (CT and NY) USA. She recently co-authored two book chapters in: Changing global perspectives on biology, conservation, and management of horseshoe crabs. 2015, Springer, New York. Mattei is a steering committee member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group and participated in a round table discussion on Conservation and Restoration of Estuarine, Beach and Mangrove Habitats: Horseshoe Crabs as a Flagship Species at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, 2016. Through this work, it became clear that overharvest, loss of habitat and climate change were leading factors in the decline of the horseshoe crab worldwide. Mattei, in collaboration with colleagues at SHU and with the help of hundreds of volunteers, began working on the installation of a living shoreline to dissipate wave energy, slow shoreline erosion and increase sediment deposition which has benefitted spawning horseshoe crabs. Mattei’s research is currently being supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, grants from federal agencies (NOAA & USACE) and the DuPont Corporation (www.sacredheart.edu/livingshorelines).
